Early life

The Tata Family was involved in Tata’s upbringing. His father served as his early role model, and shaped his views on business. Although Ratan's grandfather Ratan Chandra Tata, the founder of Tata Group, had inherited half his business from the year 1772, but the family business was carried forward by Ratan's father in 1848. The first tentative steps were taken by Ratan's father, who travelled in Great Britain and Europe to collect and study the techniques of iron and steel manufacturing. His journey in Europe opened his eyes to new possibilities. The young Ratan who was just four years old joined his father in England to help in the family business. The first time he landed in England, his first souvenir was a British penny, which he brought home in his shirt pocket to show his family.

Tata Industries Tata group's success is largely attributed to Ratan Tata's successful investment and management. Tata's leadership can be partly traced to the Tata group, formed in 1917, comprising of Tata Steel, Tata Coffee, Tata Iron and Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Capital and others. Tata group is among India's biggest conglomerates. Family Born on March 3, 1929, Ratan Tata's first job was with the Times of India. He got his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1953. He was a pallbearer of Mahatma Gandhi. Tata has three children: Rohini, Nusli and Cyrus. His professional journey Tata started working in his family business after completing his MBA. He was named Tata Motors' managing director in 1962, a position he held until 1968.

Tata Chemicals The Tata Group's other listed subsidiaries include Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Communications and Tata Power. Tata Chemicals is the world's largest producer of polyester chips. Tata Motors also produces the world's cheapest car, the Nano. Tata Teleservices is the country's biggest telecom company. Tata Dhanteras is the group's jewellery retail chain. Tata Consultancy Services Tata Consultancy Services is the IT-services arm of the group, the largest Indian exporter and owner of Jaguar Land Rover. In financial year 2011-12, the group's profit after tax was more than Rs 1 lakh crore, making it one of the largest companies in the world. Tata Motors Tata Motors manufactures and markets motor vehicles under the Tata, Jaguar, Land Rover and Nano marques.
